What Are Daily Disciplines?
The name of this blog is Daily Disciplines—that’s what it’s all about—so what are daily disciplines?
Put simply, daily disciplines are habits formed with the intention of improving your personal or spiritual self. As the name implies, they are practiced daily.
Daily disciplines can be simple, like choosing to read a passage from a holy book on a daily basis, or they can be something more involved, like practicing yoga or meditation.
You may have daily disciplines of your own already or you may be looking for some practices to adopt.
If you’re looking for practices to adopt, here are my current disciplines, which I will be chronicling for the next year (longer, if this blog becomes a success):
- Daily meditation;
- Daily reading from A Year With Rumi: Daily Readings
;
- Daily readings from the Bible, according to the “Reading the Bible in One Year” guide in The Complete Idiot’s Guide to The Bible
; and
- Getting rid of one thing each day, for one full year.
I will discuss each of these disciplines in depth over the coming days, explaining how and why I practice each one. I will likely adopt new practices over the course of the year, as well, so I will also share information about anything that I pick up along the way.
In the meantime, I’d like to hear from you. What are your daily disciplines? Why do you practice them? Are you looking to adopt new disciplines in the New Year? Please leave a comment or write your own blog post and link back to this one so that I can read your responses.

What a noble subject for a year long blog. I like the sound of this and I will be subscribing and hopefully learning from you as the year progresses. I am pleased that you thought my blog at 365lessthings was worthy of linking to and I hope I can be an inspiration to you in your daily decluttering discipline.
My daily disciplines will be:-
Keep getting rid of one thing a day.
Finding something to be grateful for each day.
Thanking God each day for the wonderful life I have.
Being creative every day.
That will do for starters and we will see what else comes along as the years progresses. Thank you in advance for the inspiration to practice daily disciplines and I hope it is a wonderful year for you.
Hi Colleen! Thanks for subscribing. I have been trying to declutter and simplify my life for a while, and I came across your blog a few months ago. I didn’t start eliminating things at the time, but I thought about it again as the New Year approached and decided to go for it.
Thanks for sharing your daily disciplines, too. I may have to add the one about finding something to be grateful for to my own practices. I think I take things for granted sometimes, so making a more conscious effort to be grateful for what I have would certainly be a good effort on my part.
[...] The challenges that I faced yesterday, and the ability to overcome them, also allowed me to find something to be grateful for that day, which is another discipline that I’ve decided to adopt this year (thanks Colleen!). [...]
